WET PAINT
It's high season for plein air: a workshop with the legendary Nancy Tankersley in early April, River Townes Plein air along the mighty Susquehanna at the end of that month. Meanwhile I'm aiming to be back in Chester County to add more local subjects to my gallery space at the Devon Horse Show gallery in late May, while taking a fresh look at the local landscape here in Berks in anticipation of Plein Air West Reading in June.
As paintings are done I'll post them here, along with where they'll likely be hanging when dry.

Ups and Downs
Rivertowns was a great show–snagged an Honorable Mention and sold all but one of my paintings. Ironically it's the one that I got the most compliments on from other other artists. What attracted me to this back alley in Columbia was the dark recess surrounded by downspouts and gutters, with a wooden star brightening up the brick wall. This 9 x 12" is $320.
Rivertowns Plein Air
Along with Breezyview and April Showers, I hung these four for the show opening tomorrow, April 29 at the Marietta Community House. Clockwise from the upper left:
Ups and Downs: a backstreet in Columbia. $320
Chiques Rock: I found exactly the view I was looking for to get this 9 x 12". $320
Summer Kitchen: An intriguing mix of textures around the Haldeman Mansion's summer kitchen, now Conoy Coffee. $290
The Boat Yard: For Saturday's Quick Draw I found a craft-packed backyard on Hazel Street. $190

Breezyview
I worked on this 12” x 16” of Breezyview Overlook during the same 2-3 hour slot for 3 days. On two of those days this spectacular spot just north of Columbia lived up to its name–I often had to hold the easel down while I painted. $390

April Showers
My opening day entry in Rivertowns was spent by Marietta's Railroad House doing this 6" x 12". $190

Corner BBQs
I wrapped up this take on an enticing spot in downtown Ardmore on April 9. It'll go to the Devon Horse Show art gallery opening May 25 but it’ll take this 8 x 10” oil almost that long to dry. Now I can focus on River Townes Plein Air, which starts April 18.
Still Life with Sailboat
An enjoyable and enlightening 3-day workshop with plein air legend Nancy Tankersley wrapped up with a novel exercise: paint a landscape using only your imagination and, as your only reference for general shapes and lighting, one of your still lifes at the beginning of the workshop. |
Ardmore Music Hall
This 8” x 10” oil of the fabled Main Line venue will open at the Devon Horse Show in late May.
The Skate House, Haverford College
In our first joint painting excursion to the Main Line this spring, my plein pal Karen Weber and I spent a sunny afternoon on the beautiful Haverford College campus. Among the folks who stopped to chat while I was painting the pond was one who filled me on its history as the place for locals to skate during the winter. This 9” x 12” will make its debut at the Devon Horse Show.

Back Channel Quiet, Portsmouth NH
A quiet July morning at Portsmouth’s South End, from a photo I took a couple years ago while painting another angle from Pierce Island. That’s the South End Yacht Club across the Back Channel. Just out of the frame is Geno’s Chowder & Sandwich Shop. A return trip might be in order for that. This 7.5” x 14.5” oil is $490, and likely heading to New England in the summer.
